Ils se divisent en deux quatrains et deux tercets, et les deux quatrains doivent \u00eatre sur les deux m\u00eame rimes masculine et f\u00e9minine, plac\u00e9es d\u2019abord dans l\u2019un et dans l\u2019autre au gr\u00e9 du po\u00e8te, mais crois\u00e9es et rang\u00e9es ensuite de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re dans le premier et dans le second.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>On a fait des sonnets en vers de dix syllabes, on en a fait en vers de huit, de sept\u00a0; on a fait des <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">demi-sonnets<\/span>, compos\u00e9s d\u2019un quatrain et d\u2019un tercet\u00a0; il y en a eu de vingt-huit vers\u00a0; on les nommait sonnets <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">doubles<\/span>. Ce sont l\u00e0 des \u00a0licences\u00a0; on les a quelquefois multipli\u00e9es au point de donner aux deux quatrains des rimes diff\u00e9rentes. La plaisanterie et les circonstances peuvent justifier cet abus des r\u00e8gles\u00a0; je n\u2019ai d\u00fb rappeler que celles-ci, sans en \u00e9tendre l\u2019application aux sonnets irr\u00e9guliers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Un des nombreux exemples de d\u00e9finition dans les nombreux dictionnaire et trait\u00e9s de versification qui dans la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du si\u00e8cle, se bornent \u00e0 reprendre, d\u2019une mani\u00e8re plus ou moins confuse, ce qui tra\u00eene dans les ouvrages de ce type du si\u00e8cle pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent.
